Stephania Glass

This is Stephania Glass, an extraordinary student at Tam High who has stepped up to be the Co-President of the Black Student Union (BSU). One of her goals is to make BSU a safe place where students can express themselves freely and break the silence for those who aren't able to speak up.

As Co-President, one of Stephania’s goals is to organize an annual 6-day trip for students to visit Historically Black Colleges in Atlanta, Georgia. As a freshman, Stephania recognized the lack of such trips and is working hard to plan next year’s college tour. “These trips are important to me and many other students as it can change all of our lives…we need to visit colleges like Clark Atlanta and Spelman to start to experience what college could be like for us and further our mindset,” she says. “Most of our parents never got the chance to go to college and follow their dreams.” Stephania is working tirelessly to create a robust itinerary that not only includes visits to five schools but also to the Civil Rights Museum and the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr.

“These students will get the chance to learn about black history and culture. We know that, with the opportunity to go to college, they would grow up to take on careers that would benefit the world and help them build families that will continue the legacy of improving the world, person by person. The world would be missing out on not having these students get to where they should be going,” says Stephania.

Tam High Principal J.C. Farr adds, “As an educational leader, I believe it is important for students to explore the many different options for continued education after high school. The Tam High BSU has a unique opportunity to gain insight into the Historically Black College and University system, a collection of schools that have a great tradition of supporting students that were not originally accepted into predominantly white universities. I fully support this endeavor, and believe we have a collective responsibility to ensure that students are aware that HBCUs exist and serve as a viable option for continued education.”

Over $20,000 was raised for the Spring 2020 trip, which has been postponed until it is safe to travel again. Stephania and the BSU look forward to sharing their experiences when they return. The BSU will begin accepting donations for future trips again very soon.
